Child Was Killed With Welding Torch

Mona Yvette Nelson and Jonathan Foster

Stephen Dean, KPRC (Houston), December 31, 2010

Homicide investigators said a welding torch is the likely weapon used in 12-year-old Jonathan Foster’s death, Local 2 Investigates reported Friday.

“We’re talking crematorium-type of hot,” said one Houston Police Department Homicide Squad officer assigned to the investigation.

Police said they confiscated a badly burned section of carpet from the home of Mona Yvette Nelson, 44, who stands charged with capital murder.

She had a welding background and police found welding equipment in her home on Allwood Street in the Fifth Ward area of Northeast Houston. Police said a section of carpet was badly burned and the smell of a human body filled the area around that carpet.

One investigator assigned to the case said it now appears Foster was killed at that spot in Nelson’s home within hours of being kidnapped from his family’s home near Shepherd Drive and 43rd Street in Northwest Houston.

One officer said on Friday that the autopsy has ruled out any trauma on the child’s body. There were no broken bones or any signs of strangulation or head wounds, so officers said it now appears the child was killed with a welding torch that could be capable of 6,000-degree flames.

“I’ve never seen burns like this,” said one officer who viewed the boy’s body after it was found in a ditch off the Hardy Toll Road on Tuesday.

He said that killers often try to cover their tracks by burning the victim’s corpse, but in this boy’s case, the burning was so intense and thorough that many veteran homicide investigators are struggling with the notion of such a grisly and painful way to die.

As for a motive, one HPD investigator said officers believe sexual abuse was behind the crime.

The officer said there is no evidence to confirm the theory at this point, but police say there was no ransom demand after the boy was kidnapped, so one officer said, “That’s the only other motive (that makes any sense).”

Nelson is jailed without bond with a court appearance set for Monday.

Police spent Friday interviewing the child’s family once again, shoring up the timeline of events and filling in routine gaps in the statements that were given immediately after the crime.

They also spent several hours organizing the carpet and other evidence confiscated from Nelson’s home. One officer said, “We got all we need (from there).”

Bryan M. Johnson texted his girlfriend about 3:30 p.m. Saturday to let her know that her toddler had vomited. Natasha Steele was covering the Columbus Crew soccer game for radio station WTVN (610 AM) when she read the text. She thought her daughter perhaps had an upset stomach, and continued working. Less than four hours later, 22-month-old London Hodge had stopped breathing, and Johnson called 911

When paramedics arrived at 7:18 p.m. at the Whitehall town house, they contacted police. Johnson, 19, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault. London was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where she died early yesterday. She had suffered severe head trauma, authorities said. Police will seek a murder charge against Johnson today, said Sgt. Dan Kelso of the Whitehall Police Department. The Franklin County coroner was to perform an autopsy on London yesterday

Steele, 21, said Johnson called her about 3 a.m. yesterday while she was at the hospital to apologize. I said, My daughter is dying right now, and you’re sorry?’ He tried to explain what happened: He was taking London upstairs for a bath and dropped her on her head. Then, during the bath, she vomited. Johnson said he dressed the toddler, laid her on the couch to sleep and noticed a few hours later that she wasn’t breathing… ‘Steele said that didn’t match what doctors and police detectives were saying. ‘They said the injuries were fresh, and there were too many bruises for it to be an accident.’

Authorities say Daniels went into the Tiger Express convenience store in Olar near closing time Monday night, killing Dyches and wounding another employee and a store customer.

Bamberg County Sheriff Ed Darnell says Daniels lived near the store. Dyches’ father Mark says Daniels harassed his daughter in the weeks before the killing.

“He took from me the most important thing in my life,” said a devastated Mark Dyches.

Dyches recalls talking to his daughter three hours earlier. “I had just got off the phone with her at 8:15, she called me last night and said she was coming by when she got off work,” said Dyches. “I sat up and waited. I texted her. She never texted back. I got a call after saying she had been shot. I got there. It was too late.”

Dyches’ 53-year old coworker, Dwight James Williams, and 17-year-old customer Kenneth Utz were also shot in the incident. Utz and Williams are recovering at area hospitals.

Investigators took Daniels into custody about 30 minutes after the incident and charged him with murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and numerous other charges.

Investigators say Daniels was trying to rob the place. Dyches says Daniels had been harassing Alicia for weeks. “I think he was trying to hit on my daughter, trying to get her to talk to him but she wasn’t interested,” said Dyches.

The woman said he may have followed her from a local gym. All the previous victims had just left the gym, including a mother and daughter. Prince struck when he knew they would be showering and thus be less attentive to their surroundings. He later bragged about the double killing to a friend and took to wearing the dead woman’s wedding ring on a chain around his neck.
